  Early Years Foundation Stage Overview

The Reception classroom learning environment is planned around the seven areas of Early Years learning and development:

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development

(making relationships / self-confidence & self-awareness / managing feelings & behaviour)

  • Communication & Language

(listening & attention / understanding / speaking)

  • Physical Development

(moving & handling / health & self-care)

  • Literacy

(reading / writing)

  • Mathematics

(numbers / shape, space & measure)

  • Expressive Arts & Design

(exploring & using media & materials / being imaginative)

 Children will be supported in their development across these seven areas through short carpet sessions, adult led group work and structured play and exploration opportunities.

To help them as they embark on the journey of learning to read and write, the children will be starting Phase 2 of the government’s Letters & Sounds phonics programme and then will move on through Phase 3. Phonics is just one part of the learning to read and write process and so the children will be immersed in a language rich environment with the aim of encouraging a love of reading and books. Communication and language (listening, understanding and speaking) and literacy (reading and writing) will be promoted throughout all activities during the day whether for example child-initiated play and exploration or a structured music class or carpet session.

Children will be encouraged to take story books home each day to share with their family and will also be introduced to reading scheme books.

 In Maths, early mathematical concepts will be explored through play, stories and songs.

 Children will be given daily opportunities to express themselves creatively through role-play, art, music and dance. The will explore different media such as watercolour painting, printing, pastels, chalk, collage and clay.

 In music sessions, children will be able to express themselves through opportunities to sing, move and play instruments.

 As well as free Physical Development play, we will be having regular games sessions in the playground and dance and movement sessions in the hall.

Autumn Term 2017

This term, the children will be settling down to life at St. Paul’s School, getting to know each other, learning the class and school routines and how to look after each other and our environment.

Our school class names this year are famous natural features around the world and Reception is named after Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania in Africa. The crater, a wildlife sanctuary, formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself 2-3 million years ago. Later in the school year, we will be doing some focussed learning around this.

During this first half term, we will be exploring Autumn and Harvest and will be reading the books The Little Red Hen and The Enormous Turnip and doing activities around these focus books. We will also be looking at the Harvest Moon Festival which is widely celebrated, particularly in China and Japan.

As the days grow shorter, we will be observing the seasonal changes that autumn brings both in our outdoor classroom and with trips to Primrose Hill.

In Maths, we will be spotting numbers around us in the environment and learning to recognise and order numbers 1 to 20.  We will also practise counting accurately, doubling numbers and saying what one more than a given number is. In addition, we will be focussing on measurement, in terms of learning the days of the week, the seasons and what happens at different times of the day. We will begin to explore 3d shapes and build models using shapes.

We will be visiting St. Mary’s Church to learn about why some people go to church and what we can find in a church and will be attending the Harvest Festival with the rest of the school. We will also look at other faiths.

To encourage Physical Development, the children will be having weekly formal PE sessions to develop their core and gross motor skills, such as balancing, jumping, skipping and catching, as well as their ability to follow instructions and negotiate space safely. In addition, there will be daily opportunities for dance and movement.
