Year 3

Welcome to Blue Grotto Class

Summer Term

Our main topic this term is The Romans. The children will use a timeline of history, find out lots of interesting facts about the Roman times, such as the extent of the Roman Empire and why and how the army were so strong, Hadriens wall and many more. We will visit the Verulamium Museum at St Albans-The Museum of Everyday Life in Roman Britain. Verulamium was the third largest city of Roman Britain and the museum, stands on the site of the Roman town. Inside the children will find recreated Roman rooms, hands-on discovery areas, a collection of roman gold coins, a video about the excavations, and some of the finest Roman mosaics and wall plasters outside the Mediterranean. This will give them the opportunity to ask lots of questions and think about how and why some of the artefacts they handle are the same or different to those today.

The children will come across some of the main emperors and understand their role during the roman time. We will learn about what the romans left behind, thus thinking about how they have shaped our lives today.

In art we will be creating mosaics and linking this to maths looking at patterns. The children will design and make clay pots, inspired by those they see at the museum.

In English we will continue with the Roman theme by re-telling the story of Romulus and Remus. They will learn to tell it by heart, using lots of drama then we will write in role as some of the characters before re-writing it.

In maths we will be learning about types of scales and how these help us to measure length, mass and capacity. We will use the expanded column method to continue work on adding and taking away, and use these to solve money problems. We will learn about Roman Numerals and use these as we cover work on telling the time. We will work on multiplication and division over the term too.

In PE we will continue our game unit, learning to move with the ball, pass, score and work in a team.

In RE we will learn about the role food plays in Islam and Sikhism looking at the symbolism behind it. We will compare the two religions, thinking about similarities and differences.
