Year 3

Welcome to Blue Grotto Class

Autumn Term

This term’s learning in Blue Grotto Class will have a scientific and geographic focus. We will be learning about the UK; its regions and major cities, along with key physical features, such as, mountains and rivers and coastlines. We will be placing these features onto maps and talking about their positions using geographical language.

Maths in the first half term will be focused on number work; place value, ordering, mental adding and subtraction methods as well as moving on to more formal written methods. The class will be moving on to multiplication and division and shape in the second half term.

In English our focus book will be The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers. The children will increase their vocabulary range to describe feelings, improve their sentences by using adjectives and interesting verbs and also to use a causal conjunction to give a reason for how someone is feeling.

Our Science theme this term is Rocks and Soil. We will be looking at large rock formations and discovering how they were formed. We will look closely at a number of rock samples, describing them, comparing and grouping them together on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties. We will investigate what happens when different rocks are scraped with a coin. We will learn about sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks and how they are formed. We will learn how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within the rock. Finally we will explore different kinds of soils and find out how they are made from rocks and organic matter. We will investigate what happens when we pour water through different rocks and soil.

In Religious Education we will be learning about worship and prayer; considering how Christians and Muslims prepare for prayer and then the ways in which they carry it out.

In Physical Education we are learning the skills needed to play tennis. The children will learn to control, strike and aim the ball.
